Sleeping at Night and the Effects on Acne

Sleeping at Night and the Effects on AcneIt really is quite annoying when you have a fool-proof skin care routine that involves religious cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and exfoliation and you still get acne breakouts from time to time. One would think that doing all those would keep acne away for good yet the little monsters still rear their nasty little red heads from time to time.

However, you need to come to terms with the fact that clean and moisturized skin is not all it takes to keep acne at bay. There are so many things that cause acne and this includes your diet, your work, and even your sheets and hair products. Would you believe that even your sleeping habits have some effect over whether you develop acne or not?

Sleep and Acne

Try to cut back on your sleeping hours by at least two hours and you will immediately see the results in the form of nasty little spots on your face that are sure signs that a breakout is on its way. It doesn’t matter how great your skincare routine is because if you lack sleep, you will develop acne.

If you do not get enough sleep, your body stresses out and that causes your hormones to go crazy and this is what increases inflammation which brings about acne. It is a vicious cycle but is one that can be remedied by getting enough sleep.

People who work nights are bound to notice this the most because even if they get to sleep 8 hours during the day, it is not enough to compensate for sleeping at night. If you have suffered the effects of less sleep at night and you are suffering from acne breakouts, do not panic since there are still some things you can do to remedy the situation.

What to Do?

  • Get enough sleep – try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep at night because this is the best time for the body to reset and heal itself. You will not notice your acne going away the moment your head hits the pillow but it will improve after 3 to 4 days. If you maintain your sleeping schedule, your acne breakouts will diminish even more.
  • Use night time treatments – while you are sleeping your body will be healing itself so why not give it a little boost by applying some overnight treatments? What you can do is wash, tone, and moisturize your face as you normally would and apply toothpaste on your zits. Choose toothpaste that contains silica but not sodium lauryl sulfate. This is really irritating to the skin and best avoided. Egg whites can also be applied to the face and left over night to work magic on your zits and acne.
  • Spot treatments – before you sleep you can apply high-quality, organic Aloe Vera gel to your zits since its cooling action will help banish inflammation. You can also try applying a paste made of baking soda and water on your zits. Leave on for 15 minute and rinse off.
