Acne Laser Treatment

Not every one is blessed with smooth skin and clear complexion, though we all hope for one. Then there are those unfortunate ones who have oily skin or combination skin that results in pimples. And though we all know that it’s bad to flatten and squeeze pimples, we still do it. As a result, we are left with skin problems, some long term and some temporary, like, persistent redness, large brown stains (hyper pigmentation) and scarring (loss of skin substructure). However, it’s important to not confuse stains with scars.

Stains are pale or brown flat marks while scars are small indentations or pockmarks in the skin. Scars can be a result of small pimples as well as large ones. However, modern science can help you get rid of these scars. Today, one of the more popular treatments for acnes is the acne laser treatment.

Acne laser treatments are effective for all forms of acne. The laser treatment for harsh forms of acne works by destroying the bacteria causing the acne. Acne laser treatment can also be used against mild acne, like simple blackheads and whiteheads. This treatment targets the serum producing glands to reopen the follicle to discharge the serum inside by heating the top layer and shrinking the oil gland. This treatment affects only the top area of the skin, leaving the deeper layers of the skin virtually untouched. So, in this treatment the skin takes very little time to heal.

There are different types of acne laser treatment for different skin problems. For example, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Lasers release small bursts of high-energy light to the skin, which vaporizes the damaged tissues, layer by layer. This treatment is effective for getting rid of all types of zits and pimples. Then there is the Nonablative Lasers. This type of laser encourages collagen growth and tightens the underlying skin leading to good skin tone, reduction in fine lines and an obvious change in skin appearance.

Erbium (ER) Lasers work by passing on the heat to water molecules in the skin. This type of laser treatment is often used on patients with superficial to moderate facial wrinkles and blemishes. It’s also effective for treating zits and acne scars. Then there is laser resurfacing treatment that is usually combined with surgical treatment which has to be completed at least 6-12 weeks before the laser resurfacing. This gives the skin time to heal and remodel itself. Laser resurfacing is excellent treatment for getting rid of shallow boxcar scars, as well as smoothing and tightening scars that have been already treated.

However, just because acne laser treatment is being sold as the latest and best cure for skin problems, doesn’t mean that it is the only one or the best available in the market. Also, it has its downside. For starters, it’s more costly than any of the other acne products available in the market. On an average, a 15-20 minute acne laser treatment session costs around $500. And for most people, that is a large amount of money. But, it is cheaper than purchasing other expensive medications and ointments.

Also, the results will be visible much sooner than with these expensive medications and ointments. So, though the price of acne laser treatment is quite high, most people feel that the price is balanced by other factors like the success rate and speed of cure.

Some other frequently seen side effects of acne laser treatment are skin discoloration, skin crusting and, in some cases, swelling of the affected areas. The Carbon Dioxide laser is also known to result in higher levels of pigmentation. However, these side effects are temporary and will soon pass.
